Datalogic is the third largest world producer and leader in Europe for bar code readers, data collection mobile computers, and RFID systems. Datalogic is dedicated to the effective use of data.
MARK & CAPTURE COMPUTE COMMUNICATE
Bar codes are considered the bridging element between the physical world, and its tangible objects, and the virtual world of information technology. Thanks to Datalogic's AutoID technologies, a link between these two worlds is possible.
MARK
Items can be “marked” in different ways and one of the keys to successful data capture processes lie in the effective marking of items and the processes are suarised by Datalogic.
CAPTURE
Bar code readers Datalogic's sophisticated bar code reading devices are divided in two families: laser and imaging.
LASER
These readers emit a laser beam: when the laser beam reaches the bar code, the light reflected is darker and reversed in respect to the white portions of the code: this causes the intensity of the reflected light to be converted into an electric signal, which then becomes amplified and digitized. In practical applications, bar codes are difficult to read, but Datalogic has developed innovative technology to capture these bar codes in any conditions with exceptionally high reading performance.
CDSQUARE™ (Code Distance Detector)
Accurately detects the position of the bar code in real-time, independent of where it is inscribed on the product. ASTRA™ (Automatically SwiTched Reading Area) permits accurate and fast reading of bar codes on transport belts, even on boxes of various sizes and heights, oriented in any direction. FLASH™ is a software controlled system with a depth-of-field of over 2 meters.
These scanners can be found at cash registers in supermarkets, enabling a cashier to sweep products over the scanner, rapidly ringing up the total cost of purchased items, and minimizing queue times at the checkout counter. SurroundScan® 3D scanning technology allows the bar code to be read from any side or surface, which means that the product can be scanned in any direction without worrying orientation. Damaged or poorly printed bar codes can also be read with innovative FirstStrike® software technolog.
IMAGING
The new generation of bar code readers draws from technology used in cameras. The "imaging" reader acts like a specialized camera, capturing the bar code image from any direction. Datalogic has also developed an imager that can read linear, 2D, or matrix bar codes under harsh conditions, such as when the label is faded or smudged, small or large, damaged, or hard-to-read. These imagers can capture images other then bar codes. In the German Postal System, imagining technology is used to capture a copy of the customer's signature and providing proof in case of a discrepancy. The ability to capture images is also integrated into handheld scanners used in stores to read bar codes on labels, such as in hospitals to read bar codes on test tubes containing specific patient information.
RFID (Radio frequency identification)
If the bar code can be considered an optical link between the real world and the virtual world, then RFID can be considered its wireless counterpart: the label is not an optic code written on a surface, but a tiny transmitter-receiver equipped with a memory onto which the code is written, and also referred to as an electronic label. To read the electronic label (tag) and decode what is in its memory (which can sometimes be unintentionally hidden) requires a reader capable of doing so wirelessly: it uses radio frequency, not light. What are the advantages of RFID? RFID readers can read a tag without seeing it; the tags are also re-writeable, which permits further information to be added as needed. At this time, the cost of an RFID tag is more than an optical tag. Some of RFID's many uses: access control, tracking and tracing in the food and clothing industries, anti-theft deterrents, and various uses in the automotive and electronics industry. The Italian Postal system makes use of the tags in unmarked letters used to gauge the efficiency of their service; American passport tags contain specific information pertaining to the individual, including a digitized and coded picture.
COMPUTE
From code to information
After having "captured" the correct code, Datalogic has developed specific software to decode the code, with the ability to measure the thickness of the bars and spaces, and to extrapolate clear content from the images. Decoders interpret information contained in the signal; collected data is transmitted through a central information system over an integrated system interface. Datalogic has developed a series of programs and software capable of obtaining images and coded information, which assures a decreased margin of error in reading the codes, and other uses. This result is a rather complex procedure, based upon the diversity of the codes and various conditions which can make them more or less readable.
Datalogic software also enables the reconstruction of codes: if the reader has come across code fragments, the software takes those pieces and quickly reconstructs data from them. ACR™ (Advanced Code Reconstruction) enables image reconstruction from codes and decoding of smaller labels, and increased readability of damaged or poorly printed codes. The patented Datalogic ACB™ (Advanced Code Builder) makes it possible to decode partially damaged codes or others that have become hard-to-read.
COMMUNICATE
Data transmission
All data collected must be transmitted to an information system over a cable or wirelessly. "Mobile" and wireless options are in higher demand and increasing in use. As a result of Datalogic's unique set of expertise new products are developed, integrating the latest and innovative technologies in the most effective way. The results are rugged devices capable to maintain their highperformance even in the most intensive and heavy applications.
Datalogic mobile computers combine bar code readers with wireless technology adapted to the most widely used standards in the IT industry to communicate with information systems such as Bluetooth® wireless technology and Wi-Fi. These devices are targeted for professional users in "mission critical" operations; they integrate innovative technologies such as voice recognition for hands-free use, and the GSM/GPRS found in cell phones to transmit data such as in field-force automation. Datalogic mobile computers integrate state of the art components including: high-speed microprocessors, intuitive and state-of-the-art displays, common IT interfaces, and specific operating systems (e.g.: Windows CE).
